Deven Shah, originally from Erie, Pennsylvania, is an accomplished vocal coach, pianist, and conductor currently based in Washington, DC. He joins Washington National Opera as a Cafritz Young Artist for the 25-26 season, where he is Assistant Conductor for Le nozze di Figaro. In the summer of 2026 he returns to the Merola Opera Program. Equally at home in new music as he in the classics, Deven has served as music staff for numerous world premieres, including those of Shulamit Ran’s Anne Frank, Mason Bates’ The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier and Clay, and the American Opera Initiative at Washington National Opera. Previous productions include Rigoletto, Carmen, Alcina, Eugene Onegin, Roméo et Juliette, Die Zauberflöte, Le Comte Ory, and Gianni Schicchi.An accomplished pianist, he has performed with noted instrumentalists Alan Baer, Eugene Izotov, Dennis Michel, and Dale Clevenger, and has appeared in venues such as Heinz Hall, Steinway Hall, and the Kennedy Center. Internationally, Deven has served on the faculty of the Tel-Aviv International Summer Opera Program (2023), and is an alumnus of the Merola Opera Program and the Music Academy of the West. He has performed in the masterclasses of Arthur Fagen, John Churchwell, Warren Jones, Julia Faulkner, Sasha Cooke, George Shirley, and Lawrence Brownlee. Deven holds his degrees from Indiana University, where he earned a Bachelor of Music with Honors and highest distinction, a Master of Music and a Performers Diploma in Collaborative Piano. He has studied piano with Chris Cano, Kevin Murphy, and Emile Naoumoff, voice with Peter Volpe, and organ with Janette Fishell and Vincent Carr. He has also served as assistant music director, conductor, and pianist for Carol Vaness’s graduate opera workshop. Awards include a Graduate Assistantship in Collaborative Piano, a Premier Young Artist Award, and an Artistic Excellence Award from Indiana University.
